A STUDY ON THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT IN ART MUSEUMS

อัปเดตเมื่อ 18 ส.ค. 2563

Technology is only a means of support for communication and interpretation, not a solution.

Abstract

This research studies the development of technological tools in museums to develop and support visitors' interpretation and imagination of art, including studying how to use the guidelines to create a market attractiveness of museums by using tools that support the content displayed in the art museum. In this regard, this study is to improve the learning art to be comfortable and accessible to many groups of people of all types.

There are now several tools in art museums created to support art for audiences who have complete senses and audiences with particular sensory impairments. However, it is good to have a tool or process that can adjust the perception process through the sensory system to the interpretation so that it could gain audiences interpret the art in the best way. This paper will educate and guide for the development of tools that support art learning in the future.

However, regardless of building any tool, it is best to focus on the needs of people to optimise the technology, and no matter how rapidly changing technology and social media are growing, the physical face is still a necessity at the museum. At the heart of this research is the focus of the museum's selection of technology to spotting gaps where technology can still be applied to create effective interpretation and visualisation of art within the museum.

Before Founding

This research begins with observing museum events that occur when people visit the art. The observation shows that some people always look for a small caption on the side of the artwork while someone turned to talk to the person next to discuss the meaning of the work, and some people decide to walk away. That observation raised the questions: How did they understand the art, and how did they interpret it?

The search of several studies happened after the observation by using keywords searching on the internet, such as interpretation in art, tools for support interpretation and technology that support an interpretation. These research has led to the finding of technology that helps visually and hearing-impaired people, and that is the starting point for analysing ideas for questioning this research.

The question of this research does not tell about technology that assists visually and hearing-impaired people. It is merely a link to the hypothesis that, if there is a technology that can assist the museum's needs, provide information to visitors, helping visitors to get information and interpret the artwork, it may also help the museum will get more visitors engaging.

Therefore, the primary questioning of the research is what sensory technology tools are being created by marketing initiatives to engage audiences through an interpretation of exhibits whilst create imaginative experiences for individuals in different interests? When the main question of the research was obtained, the researcher analysed 4 sub-questions which were summarised as follows:

  • What kind of technology currently being developed or use in a museum?

  • How museum use technology to engage audiences?

  • How many people accept the use of technology in a museum?

  • What is the relationship between technology and needs of audiences learning in a museum?

Founding

Uses of technology in art museum.

The founding of this research is a combination of technology that is now mainstream media technology in museums, as well as an evolving and exciting sensory technology that will be adapted to support interpretation in museums. There is also a study of today museums applications of the technology which can be divide into pre-visiting, during visiting and after visiting, and if these 3 groups of technology are related, it will make the selection of technology more efficient. The relationship between technology and the needs of audiences are almost at the heart of choosing technology in museums. The research has shown that the selection of audiences' technology depends on 2 main factors: visitor type with different motivation, and needs of audiences that are not the same. Therefore, the duty of museums is to deal with those technologies or tools to suit the target audience and understand of people about using technology to communicate in art museums. The discovery was divided into three groups of technology users: museum moderators, audiences and artist groups. This research has shown that selecting technology to support information, content and management in museums is acceptable, but there are still issues with real experience in the field of online visits, as well as a distraction to technology rather than focus on real objects.

After Founding

Technology never stands still, and so does the needs of people, as museums serve as a means of giving knowledge to people. Changes in communication services are up to date at all times. The museum should start to develop digital platforms and take people to have a journey with them by making a great community experience from choosing the right technology to support. Rightly whether it is a physical face or online face, online activities are taking over a huge role in the museum. Therefore, it is essential to understand how to communicate in online channels, with many companies trying to develop it continuously. A real experience of audiences remains a priority because if a museum has no visitors, there is likely a museum without life. Technology is only a means of support for communication and interpretation, not a solution.
